Sanctuaries are areas that act as reservoirs for animal species that are threatened with extinction and require safe breeding habitats. The population of such animals is closely monitored, and opportunities for breeding and management of such animals are a priority of the country. Sanctuaries can be managed by either private people or by the government.

Getting there: Take Bulawayo Rd. Turn left at the 30 km peg. Proceed down for 2 km. The sanctuary is near Lake Chivero.

Location: The sanctuary lies about 25 km from the city of Masvingo.
Getting there: From the city one follows the Bulawayo Highway and turns left at the signpost to the Sanctuary. Please note that after the turn, the road to the sanctuary becomes gravel.

Chimanimani Eland Sanctuary |

Location: The sanctuary is located within the Chimanimani National Park, probably Africa’s least known nature reserve.
Getting there: An hour’s jeep ride from the village, it includes the magnificent Chimanimani Mountains, a massive barrier of ancient and jagged crystalline rock forming the border of Mozambique.
