The Great Zimbabwe Monument

This UNESCO World heritage site is popular for its rich cultural history. Allow at least 3 hours to discover this area and be sure not to miss the acropolis hill part of the monuments. The monuments are the second largest man-made structures in Africa after the pyramids of Egypt. So while in Masvingo, be sure to include this place on your itinerary.

 

Lake Chivero

This place, built about 20km from Harare has the famous Kuimba Shiri Bird sanctuary where at least 400 bird species can be seen. Fishing, boat rides and gotch gotch (braai/ barbecue) is very popular here. Nearby is a game reserve and some rock paintings.

Matobo Hills

Located close to Bulawayo, this place is popular for its recreational facilities near the dame, animal views, traditional viewing, the graves of Cecil John Rhodes and King Mzilikazi. It is also a perfect halfway house for travellers from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls.

Mana Pools National Park

Whether you opt to go on an organised tour or you choose to go on a do-it-yourself animal safari, you are guaranteed to view virtually all major Zimbabwe wildlife in this park. Just make sure you have a powerful off road car before you embark on the beaten track.

Matetsi / Charara hunting safaris

If you have the stamina, embark on the beaten track with professional trophy hunters who are licensed to kill animals legally. The most popular hunting safaris are found in the Matetsi and Charara areas in Matabaleland North province. Animals shot and killed vary from elephant, buffalo, lion any other. The rhino may not be killed since its endangered.

The Heroes Acre

The place is a symbol of respect to all the fallen heroes of Zimbabweans who died to achieve Zimbabwe independence. The place is not just a burial place, there is also a symbol of the unknown soldier- reference to all people who died during the war but are not buried at this shrine. A small museum is also located nearby.

The townships

Travellers must not miss a trip to the townships. Some of the most popular townships are Mbare especially Mbare musika and Mupedzanhamo market. In other areas, communal visits can be arranged and tourists can have a meal in the village or arrange a visit to a local church, school or clinic.

Mt Nyangani

It is 2592m high and located in the eastern highlands. Travellers scale the mountain just for the thrill of conquering this humongous mountain range. From the top of the mountain, one can enjoy the views of Mocambique. Whether conditions on the mountain are unpredictable as massive gale force winds can blow any time without any warning

Binga.

This remote area boasts the Batonga community. The community is the people who were displaced when Lake Kariba was built. In this area, one can visit the Chibwatata Hot springs (very hot water coming out of a hole in the ground). There is also the Chilangalilo Co-operative where one can find some of the best handcrafts such as music instruments, drums and other handmade souvenirs.
